When making a golf backswing-do you roll the clubface open on the cocking of the wrists?

On the backswing it looks like pros are rolling their wrists on the cocking instead of trying to keep the clubface closed all the way back and still closed on the downswing thru contact.

There's a simple way to check if your wrists are hinging properly:

On your takeaway, when the club is roughly parallel to the ground and at waist level, stop your swing, if the toe of your club is pointing straight up, you are hinging your wrists correctly and you don't have to worry about it anymore.

I'd like to take credit for this piece of instruction, but I gleaned it from one of Harvey Penick's books ;)

No and Yes. The observation of "cocking the wrists" should be just the natural movement of the arms, wrist and shoulders on the backswing, the follow thru should mimic the backswing.
